Now, most of my
friends know that i don't like Tony Abbott. Not one bit. In fact, I detest the
man. I often use a phrase from my grandma (who is
a moderately conservative woman); 'Tony Abbott is a disgusting
human being'.

Last week he further
showed Australia how ignorant he is about issues of International Human Rights
Law, by again saying that those who arrive on Australian shores by boat are
'illegal'.

Under international law, people have a right to seek asylum from persecution
and other serious human rights abuses. In turn, governments have an obligation
not to send them to territories where they face a real chance of harm.

It has been said over and over, and he must be aware that the use of the word
'illegal' when referring to asylum seekers is against international law, and he
is deliberately inflaming public opinion by continuing to use
the term. He has no idea, having never visited those in indefinite detention,
of the enormous pain and trauma he is inflicting by keeping public opinion the
way it is. I believe that the God he pretends to respect will
not recognize him when they finally meet face to face.

Deliberately causing harm and distress to those who have suffered so
much trauma already is, as my grandma would say, disgusting.

A Stem of beautiful rose bush cut off and planted, few days
later they were buts on the stem as a new comer. I was similar manner to my birth,
both of my parent’s wish I was born from my mother on the war loud. when I was
been in whom the heard beet might be changed frequently it was unknown to me
but my mother ever had distress of afraid of war this was the significant of war,
there was a beautiful for every bad from the stem, likewise I hope that when I
was born my family would have been with pleasure in my house. Now the stem but
grows strong roots which was seen by farmer. The bushes just ready to replant
during mu younger period also had been like the bush. I hope that the plant
being with beautiful as show my displaced give be the new & new experience
in my life I thought that the bush also had new experience. The bush replanted
but there was no fatique in the bush but it was lost its environment and I also
lost my society and relations which induced more pain and fatique exist as the symptom
in my life later the bush grew up well according to the environment there is no exception in my life

Long days took after the bush by the farmer there is no
flowers from the bush so the farmer thought to put fertilizer likewise my life
also in the camp. When I stay in the camp without coming out sometime

I will get call from psychiatric if I go there he ask 5 questions as usual as
follows; do you feel sleepy? Can you eat? can you get the call to home? do you
get the nightmare? Do you thing to commit suicide? These are the questions ,
these questions never be changed but the psycian may be changed according to the situation of
the refuges aim some doctors may ask “Do you commit to nightmare”so that night cannot
sleep with thinking about suicide . this question would have been as the advice
for the suicide. When I think about my family I’ll cry but cannot cry loudly
while the panic with me, before put the fertilizer by farmer the bush blossomed
for beautiful flower certainly they were with brightness but there non to enjoy but the human like more flower from
the bush than the leaves. This is the sign of human society . few months later
the fertilizer put under the bush and I
laught with panic because bush and I both were in the similar manner the bush
lived well for I want to live happy without thinking I used to swallow
mirtazapine tablets for the happiness for the last four years.

I want to forget certain life of the society for which I
need to laugh unwritten law I never smoke & drink today I swallowed and laughed without anyone makes comic I used
the tablets for laugh this society likes to see me in this condition beginning
from the world so many leaders born up to now and they cannot make love or kind
in the camp life , it is a dream and put the water more and more to the bush
because I know the effect of fertilizer & as I know the strength of effect
of the tablets which gives me the effect as tasteless and unanalyses , less
thinking less sleeping stomach pain & body pain .almost my five sensors are lost now .the bush as much more flowers
all the peoples are enjoying when they are looking but the bush lose the
certain strength this is unknown to others but I know this but I have the
experience in the camp , I lived here really to this country as a refuge for
the last four years as the reason I have been truly to the ASIO as passed me
thousand of thousand refuges living well I know more people of those crowed
where is the thugs and guilty who never attend the psychiatric & never want
the struggle would give hand to them which also truth to them I cannot analysis
that how I’ll be in the future for which the country must analyses that what is
my future life but I’ll live well . the
herpes of the bush dried and the bushes are fatique and it is near to the end .
the gardener watch it and thought to keep for few days until the new plants
arrive in the last moment the bush blows some flowers with pain without reality
so the same thing happened to me with the panic the days gone when I was in the
WEIPA queen land if ask some water to the nurse who told me to take some water
at the moment if I had angry the another day gave me more mirtazapine tablets ,
for that reason I never get angry this is the condition , if I take more
tablets it is harmful to the body this is exception in the medical system
likewise more panic without tear cannot tell by words the reflection of the
panic cannot bring out the tear which was subsided already

The reflection of beauties , this bush has been certainly
little beauty flower & measure this bush nearly about death. She has no any
fertilizer for the bush to become really life and it has no life in the
scientific world , it is death it is end, entirely finished ..

I am ?

Here is a letter that was given to me by one of the men who has been in detention in Australia for longer than 4 years. He was a journalist in Sri Lanka. I have known him for almost 2 years now, he is a wonderful man, smart, funny, hardworking, - exactly the kind of person Australia needs.

We Tamils left our country , Sri Lanka , we had to flee from the violence as it was not safe to remain
there; becasue of the armed forces. Leave our country, that we called home, was indeed a very difficult
decision that we had to make ,Some of us in making this decision, had to leave out wives and
children, with a few pregnant. More over, everyone had to leave their parents, and extended family,
braving the might of the Ocean, not sure whether we would reach our destination, or just another
addition to the count; lives lost at sea.
Fortunately, by the grace of God, or an act of faith, we reached this promised land, culled Australia
in the hope of finding safety and security. We were glad that we were accepted as refugees, and
dreamt that we would them be granted a visa. However, for 53 Tamil clients; this dream, has turned
out to be mental torture. ASIO had assessed us as being a securing risk, and we would like to pose
the question to the Australian government, to whom? Sadly , most of us have been in detention for
four, or more years, with no reason given to us, how we were assessed as a security risk.
I would like to ask ASIO, to give me the reasons, how they have assessed me to be a security risk. If
they can provide me with a valid reason, I am prepared to accept it,and to be put in jail, if I am a
genuine thereat to the people of Australia.
I and my friends have been held in detention for so long, that we have developed a routine
pattern. We are awake all night, whilst some of us go to bed, tossing and turning, despite taking a
cocktail of drags to keep our sanity, we sleep as much as four hours, and traverse from our
accommodation to another building, back and forth; like zombies, and cannot comprehended what,
all this means to the powers, that keep us in this state.
The continued detention is affecting, us physically, mentally and psychologically. We not only have
to cope with detention, a from of torture, we have to meet the challenges of our families. Whilst we
remain in detention, we are unable to provide food for our families, the love of a husband to his
wife and children, as well as to our parents. Every time we ring and speak to our loved ones, we
cannot explain why we are still in detention. These phone calls generate very heart felt feelings on
both sides, that our difficult to explain in words; except to say, our voices are choked with pain, and
many a sleepless night. Our phone calls to our families bring about thoughts of suicide, some have
attempted through kindly words of been prevented through kindly words of caring officers.
However , human beings have a limit to their tolerance, and suicide would be the only means to end
this mental torture.
The Australian government in response to the High court decision, took three months to appoint a
Jude,to review the “Negative Assessment “given by ASIO. The review is not based on law or a
directive of the High Court, but another ploy of the government, to be seen to be doing something;
but doing nothing. The Judge Margarent Stone, has no powers to make any decisions, only make
recommendations to be considered by ASIO. There is no time frame for this Review; it could be an
indefinite process, and our lives will be in limbo, with continued detention. Therefore, we will be
left we no alternative, but to find a solution; “ death will be sweeter” than continued detention.
Hence, dear friends, there is one way you could help us; you need to have a grass-roots movement
that will grow to hold meetings in every state, attended by thousands.
Friends, you have a window of opportunity to send a message to the government and the
opposition, that they need to reach bi-partisan Agreement, and released us to into the community, as
a first step, with working rights; a Bridging visa. If not send a clear message to these parties ; that
all the marginal seats will be targeted, with support for the Greens, who have tirelessly and
consistently cared about the Rights of Refugees.

They not only stopped eating but stayed outside for that entire time on the small cricket pitch. Two of my Tamil friends were taken to hospital for severe malnourishment.

I visited them just after the strike finished and it brought tears to my eyes seeing my friends so weak and skinny. Even though they were so tired and still had hunger pain they insisted on bringing me and my friend food and cups of cardamon tea.

Julia Gillard was interviewed on the radio about the strikes and she actually sounded repugnant. She even said that there was no point striking because their 'situation hasn't changed'. If being in detention in a country that is not your own for over 4 years doesn't change your situation - I don't know what does.

Here are a few ways my friends situations have changed:
- They have become suicidal at times - even attempting
- They loved ones have disappeared out of their lives due to marrying someone else
- They have grown 4 or 5 years older
- They are terrified about the future
- They have nothing to live for and no autonomy

All of which they did not expect when they were interviewed by ASIO.

That interview by ASIO about their security was only based on questions put to the refugees and then decided upon based on "well they MIGHT be lying". Talk about 'fair and proper checks' that Julia Gillard spoke of.

The thing is - most people are getting confused with this issue and their fears of 'Australia having not enough room for refugees' - well I say this is a SEPARATE issue because Australia has already accepted these men as refugees - therefore agreeing to protect them and then denies them their human rights. There are currently under 60 indefinite detention refugees in Melbourne - is Australia not big enough for them? The government is spending money on keeping them in detention - why not let them work in the community and contribute to our economy.

The final point being -if you accept refugees it must be Australia's responsibility to treat them within their human rights.

One man last week had sewn his lips together in protest. This meant that he was also on a hunger strike which lasted at least 6 days. This is a clear sign that depression and anxiety is high. One of my friends admitted that he had suicidal thoughts that same week and was taken to a psychiatric hospital and pumped full of drugs. A 'holiday' to make him feel better?
It makes me feel like passing on the message - we need to spread the word about refugees. Sasi has a great sense of humour. He is cheeky though. We are constantly saying 'Nama vileh' which is Tamil for 'I don't believe you'. He comes up with the wildest stories too. Sasi said he would give me a story when he gets out of detention. He used to be a school teacher and is very smart. He can sew too. I laughed one day when he came into the visitor centre wearing quite a comfortable pair of pants that were similar to fishermans pants. I only laughed because he told me he made the pants from his old bed sheets and I joked that he must have rolled out of bed with the sheets twisted around as pants to give him the idea. Don't get me wrong, the pants were quite good.

One I have just come across is an Australian music initiative called Key of the Sea, combining the talents of great aussie artists with people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. The music combines heaps of different styles and beats, with amazing musicians who have 'brought their cultural heritage from across the sea, escaping war, hardship or persecution'. There are two albums- both available on itunes. Profits go to supporting refugee and asylum seeker projects in Australia. Get on board!
"That's my eye" Raj said to me pointing at this picture. Drawing can be therepeutic I guess but this drawing made me understand how fragile and sensitive men in detention can be. It is not often that you will see any man cry in public. They bottle up their tears in private. But I must say, on the day that the high court released its decision to rule indefinite detention inhumane there were tears in public. I could see just how much a fragment of hope could break the fascade of composure and reveal all the fears and anxiety that years in detention had created.

This is one of Raj's drawings from his sketch pad. It was his birthday last Monday and after a long and tedious organisational process, a couple of his friends in Australia were able to take him out of detention for the day and visit Melbourne zoo. This drawing was created after his visit. I found it interesting to hear that a man in detention could be released for a day to see animals in detention.

It shows that the issues surrounding refugees and asylum seekers should be brought to young peoples' attention
. If each new generation can be exposed to knowledge and experiences that create empathy and understanding, then bit by bit, the world may change. Hope you enjoy and...please share!!!
This outlines the case David Manne took to the high court quite well. It is before the ruling of indefinite detetention as inhumane was released a few weeks ago. I just think David Manne has worked so hard and with such compassion. There is no pat on the back big enough for him.
It is interesting to see how the government is trying to sweep this under the carpet and the downplay of this news in the media.
Considering how big this news is, it is hardly on the news.

Nirma as I said before, makes the tea when we visit the
detention centre. He’s good at it too. Cardamom/cardamon tea I believe is a
common hot drink in Sri Lanka and is made similar to chai on the stovetop. I
was fascinated to see how Nirma makes the tea without a stove. Because the
visitor centre is only equipped with a microwave and an urn, he has figured out
and fine-tuned what he has to do to get it pretty well perfect every time. So
if you want a delicious cup of tea, visit Nirma at the detention centre!

The specific method is as follows:

Use two black tea bags and quickly dash them with boiling
then place them in one polystyrene cup. Then pour in milk in the same cup to ¾ way
up. Add about 5 dried cardamon pods (will figure out the right name soon) and
then place in the microwave for 2 whole minutes.

When it is done and hotter than ever, Nirma takes it out,
takes the tea bags out and the cardamon and then grabs another polystyrene cup.
He then proceeds (to my amazement) to pour the tea from one cup to another at a
great height. Not a drop is spilt. It looks like one long stream of milk from
one cup to the other, almost a metre high.

The purpose of this I discovered, was to make the tea froth
and texture.

Nirma suggested putting a little honey in it if you have it
and you like things sweet.
